Make the show personal
Think about the music, stories and performances they already enjoy. A favourite soundtrack is a stronger clue than the biggest poster. Check whether they have already seen the production and whether they would love a return visit.
Plan the reveal and the real date
The birthday and the performance do not have to be the same day. A birthday reveal with a later confirmed outing gives them time to prepare. If the date is not settled, avoid promising a fixed performance and give a voucher instead.
Include the person they will go with
Decide whether you are gifting one seat, joining them yourself or covering a pair. Check adjacent seats and the full booking total. Add travel or dinner as a separate promise only if you are arranging it.
